Misc & Extras
Scrollwise
Scrollwise is a free menu bar app for Mac that keeps natural scrolling on your trackpad and Apple Magic Mouse, and classic scrolling on a wheel mouse, all at the same time. macOS has only one scroll direction switch for every device, so people who use both a trackpad and a mouse end up flipping it back and forth all day. Scrollwise checks which device each scroll comes from and fixes the direction for you.
Key Features
- Knows Which Device You Use: Scrollwise asks macOS which device sent each scroll, so a trackpad and a mouse can scroll in opposite directions at the same time.
- Nothing to Switch: Connect or disconnect a mouse whenever you like. The direction is right the moment you touch it.
- Made for Magic Mouse: Every Magic Mouse is recognised, including the original and Magic Mouse 2, even if you renamed it. It scrolls like a trackpad by default.
- Separate Setting for Each Device: Choose natural or standard scrolling for the trackpad, the Magic Mouse, and a wheel mouse on their own.
- Live Readout: See which device Scrollwise just detected and whether it flipped the scroll, so you know it is working.
- Private and Light: It only looks at scroll and touch events, never keystrokes, and it only goes online to check for updates.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Scrollwise free?
Yes. Scrollwise is free, with no account needed. There is an optional tip link if you want to support the developer.
Do I need to change the macOS Natural scrolling setting?
No. Leave the macOS switch as it is. Scrollwise works on top of it, whichever way it is set.
What macOS version does Scrollwise need?
Scrollwise needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and it runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
How do I install Scrollwise?
You can download the zip from the Scrollwise website and drag the app into Applications, or install it with Homebrew using the command brew install --cask aqibjavedzeepalm/tap/scrollwise.
Why does Scrollwise need Accessibility access?
macOS only lets approved apps adjust scroll events. Scrollwise asks for Accessibility access once during setup.
Does Scrollwise record my keystrokes?
No. It only sees scroll and touch events, never keystrokes, and it does not record what you scroll. It has no analytics, and its only network request is a check for new versions.
Is Scrollwise notarized by Apple?
Yes. Scrollwise is signed with the developer Apple ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other app.
Are there other apps for mouse and trackpad settings?
Yes. LinearMouse is another option for customizing how your mouse and trackpad behave on Mac.
