MacOSCleaner

MacOSCleaner is a free, native cleaner and app uninstaller for Mac, built with Swift 6 and SwiftUI. It scans 55 cleanup categories, from browser and app caches to Xcode, Docker, and local AI model caches. It also finds app leftovers and duplicate files, and includes a disk space analyzer. Everything is shown for you to review first, and the app collects no telemetry. The source code is public under GPLv3 with the Commons Clause, so it is source-available rather than open source.

Key Features

  • Smart Cleanup: 55 categories and 2,343 path definitions cover 304+ apps and 92 toolchains, including browsers, package managers, Xcode, Docker, and AI tools. Risk badges show up after the scan, and you choose what to remove.
  • Forensic App Uninstaller: Drag in any app and MacOSCleaner looks up to 5 levels deep for leftover files, using 30 types of evidence. Safe and Balanced modes control how careful it is.
  • Duplicate File Finder: It compares file size, then a quick hash, then a full SHA-256 check, so only exact duplicates are found. Master original files are protected.
  • Disk Space Analyzer: Drill into folders with clickable breadcrumbs, filter by type, preview with Quick Look, and move items to the Trash.
  • Process Manager and Startup Services: See what runs on your Mac, sort by CPU or memory, and load, unload, or stop LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons.
  • On-Device Apple Intelligence: Ask for an explanation of a file, cache, process, or startup agent. It runs on your Mac with no cloud relay.
  • Siri and Shortcuts: Trigger Quick Clean, Scan Storage, or Uninstall App from Siri or your own Shortcuts.
  • Safety First: Critical paths like /System, /usr, and ~/.ssh are blocked. Uninstalled apps and duplicates go to the Trash, and caches and logs are removed only after path checks.
  • 14 Languages: The interface is available in 14 languages, including Arabic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is MacOSCleaner free?

Yes. MacOSCleaner is free to download and use, with no paid tier and no ads. The developer accepts optional donations.

Is MacOSCleaner open source?

Not quite. The code is public under GPLv3 with the Commons Clause, which makes it source-available. You can read and build it, but the Commons Clause limits selling it.

What macOS version does MacOSCleaner need?

MacOSCleaner needs macOS 26 or later and a Mac with Apple Silicon, M1 or newer.

Why does macOS say it cannot verify MacOSCleaner?

The app is ad-hoc signed and not notarized by Apple. Move it to Applications, try to open it once, then go to System Settings, Privacy and Security, and click Open Anyway. Only do this with the download from the official GitHub releases page.

Does MacOSCleaner collect any data?

No. All scanning runs on your Mac with zero telemetry. The only network request is a check of GitHub Releases for a new version each time the app launches.

Does it delete files permanently?

Not by default. Apps you uninstall and duplicate files go to the Trash. Selected caches and logs are deleted after you confirm and the paths are validated.

Is it a free CleanMyMac alternative?

Yes. MacOSCleaner covers cleanup, uninstalling, duplicates, and disk analysis for free, as an alternative to CleanMyMac. For a fully open-source cleaner, see Mole, and for an app uninstaller, see Pearcleaner.
