Upscayl
Upscayl is a free, open-source desktop application that lets you enlarge and enhance low-resolution images using advanced AI models. Unlike commercial alternatives that rely on slow, expensive cloud subscriptions, Upscayl runs entirely locally on your Mac.
Key Features:- Local AI Upscaling — blows up images by 2x, 4x, or more without sending data to any remote servers
- Batch Processing — upscale entire folders of images simultaneously to save time
- Apple Silicon Optimization — natively leverages M-series neural engines via Vulkan architecture for hyper-fast local processing
- Multiple AI Models — includes Real-ESRGAN, digital art models, and sharpening tools out of the box
- Free and Open-Source — licensed under AGPLv3 with no subscriptions or daily limits
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Upscayl need an internet connection?
No. Upscayl processes everything locally using your Mac's GPU and neural engine. Your images never leave your computer, making it completely private and highly secure.
What models does Upscayl use?
It utilizes Real-ESRGAN alongside custom-trained models optimized for photos, digital artwork, and low-res illustrations. You can also import custom-trained models from the community directly into the settings.
Is Upscayl optimized for M-series Mac chips?
Yes. The universal macOS binary utilizes native hardware acceleration. It runs significantly faster on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) than older Intel Macs.
Can it fix heavily blurred or out-of-focus photos?
Not exactly. Upscayl excels at adding sharp detail to pixelated, low-resolution images by predicting missing data. However, it cannot de-blur or reconstruct an entirely out-of-focus snapshot.
